Run Forest Run...

Yesterday afternoon was perfect recess weather. Sunny and a bit warm, which is about time around here! I was counting down the minutes to when I could take the kids out.

I sitting on the "teacher bench" by the playground equipment, when a couple of my kids come running over to announce that one my girls had gotten hurt. She was all the way over on the blacktop, next to the playground but not exactly close. I look on down to see the girl curled up crying.

I don't know what prompted me, maybe the kids running along side me. I decided to sprint it across the grass and halfway across the blacktop. I was a runnin'! I was a runnin' fool!

I could hear the kids as I whizzed by them, "Ms. M. is running!" "Go Ms. M!" Then shouts of Ms. M, Ms. M! I waved as I ran by. I could see all the kids from other classes just stop and stare.

I get to the girl to discover not even a drop of blood or a bone sticking out! I asked what happened, she got pushed off the big boulder. Just some little scrapes, nothing really, just a lot of tears.

I said to her "Did you see me? I ran all the way here!" in a dramatic, I'm going to die voice. "I almost died running here!" By then she was cracking up but still crying. Got her up, brushed her off and sent her on her way to play.

Amazing thing, I ran in my oh so cute ballet flats!

A Little Rant...

I was in the WORST mood ever yesterday!!! On Tuesday, I was thoroughly enjoying myself visiting my sister, who lives in Chicago. We were in the middle of the primate house at the Lincoln Park Zoo when my phone rings. It's my school. I answer, a little recorded, oh so cheery sounding message, "Good news staff and students we are opening for school and work TOMORROW!"

What? There was never even a glimpse of hope that they would reopen early. EVERYTHING we received said we are shut down until Monday. Do not go near the building, you are quarantined! Then all of a sudden at 2:00 in the afternoon we get the call to come in the next day?

I know I am complaining about a situation where I did get three free days off, but the fact is you can't expect staff and families to drop their schedule and plan for work/school in less than a day. I would have been fine with going back on Thursday, which would have given me time to prepare my lessons, but not the next day! Ends up there was a high amount of kids gone, probably half went away for the week, some were sick, and others never got the message we were opening early.

So needless to say I spent the next hour at the zoo with a cloud over my head. I had to leave Chicago, go back home to the suburbs, and back to reality.
The kicker is that they really didn't disinfect the school. They said they cleaned, but NO! The library was never touched, my room and most of the teacher's rooms were never touched.

I stepped inside the building yesterday and literally cried. I was so incredibly tired from walking all over downtown and the zoo. My body was so sore and I was not ready for the kids. Good thing I wasn't the only one that was in a rotten mood, the whole staff was.

Yes, It's the Pigs..

Yes, my school has been shut down due to the H1N1 Flu. I got the call after leaving school on Thursday. A "probable" case has been detected in one of our students. So then I get home and check my email for more information only to find out that they closed us until May 11th!! Even before the H1N1 hit, we had a VERY high number of kids sick with whatever flu is going around and the stomach flu. One class a week before had four kids throw up during the day, another had three. On Thursday one class had 8 kids gone. Some came and were sent home with flu like symptoms. So the county health board used the swine case and the fact that we had a high number of kids sick, to shut down for as long as we are.

Can you say unexpected major time off work??? I don't even know what to do with myself! I sat around all day yesterday thinking I should be doing something. Now I have five more days like that. I have all my stuff at work, can't get in to get it.

Good news is that we don't have to make up the days at the end of the school year. Now, just have to figure out how productive I want to be next week. The zoo is looking like a good idea...
