Restructuring

I have too much to say for one blog today! Our district got a new superintendent this year and boy is he whipping things into shape! It is so refreshing to have someone come in and see our problems and try to fix them, in a good way. He has now totally restructured our administration for next year already, is cutting administrative positions.
Get this, he wants our input too! Each school got a "suggestion box" which I think is more of bitch and moan box for some. Everyday I think of a new "suggestion" to put in the box. Then I tell everyone else to write down that same suggestion so we can stuff the box!

Well, here's to next year, and to hope that teachers are not cut. Which my "psychic" powers" which my teaching neighbor refers ("psycho powers" in a nice way) says teachers are not being cut, may be moved around but not laid off.

Lying

If there is one thing I do not tolerate well, its lying! I handle many situations very well and calmly, but lying is one I do not put up with. Yesterday, a boy of mine, lied right to my face about finishing his work, and when I questioned him on, he stilled lied! Arghh, I "dragged" him over to the computer where I then proceeded to email his mom letting her know of the incident. Then I read the to him and then clicked send.
So after school, there comes his mom walking down the hall. I was like ok, here it comes! Unexpectedly, she was there for something else, and hadn't even see the email yet!
I have to say that the parents of this boy are 100% supportive, which is refreshing, for a change. They are looking to whatever they can to help him and me. Today the boy hands me an envelope with my name on it. He wrote me an apology letter, saying I am sorry for hurting your feelings. Love, the boy. Awww very nice of him, now if didn't go and punch another boy in the chest, the both were doing it for fun, a half hour later.
You know I have to admit, I love my trouble kids as much as I love my angel kids. I think teaching would be boring if they were all angels.

Inauguration Day

Yesterday I made my kids watch the inauguration ceremonies. I think it was really important for them to just see it and to be apart of it. I don't know if they agree. I know that a lot was above their heads, it was the concept of it that I wanted them to get. They were very cute, standing and clapping and singing along to the anthem. Although for some reason the tv reception in my room was horrible, I had to finally stream it from the Internet, which they told us not to do. Well if I had better reception, I wouldn't have to!
One boy, who was sitting next to me, after an ignored first warning, turned to me during the ceremony and said, "Aren't we wasting our Daily 5 time?" He never cared before, I thought it was cute, funny, and an eye roller at the same time.

The Blogging World

I admit, I am an addict of reading blogs, teacher's blogs! Although I am finding comfort that I am not alone out there! Teachers that blog are teachers that read blogs!" Reading blogs gives me a sense of "normalcy" per se. I know that I am not the only one who feels like they are swimming upstream some days. So many of us face the same daily challenges. Sitting down in front of the computer, opening up my favorites list, and getting ready to see who else had a day like me good or bad, revives my teaching spirit!

Tomorrow starts the second half our our school year. I can't believe we are already at the half way mark of the school year, but then again I can. It seems like August was years ago. It has flashed by so quick! There are so many things I want to do with these kids, but have yet to accomplish. I think this year, more than any year, I feel there is no time to do anything. I don't know why, school day is the same length, still have the same amount of kids, but something is different.

Last week we had two days off of school due to extremely cold weather, Arctic air. I've been given a five day weekend. Which has been really great for my teaching spirit, even though we have to make up the days in June. I have gotten some things done for the classroom, that if I hadn't had the days off, I wouldn't have ever completed.

So here is to the second half of the school year, more doing ideas and less putting off! That reminds me, I have a stack of report cards being put off, they are due Friday! :) Spoke too soon!
